Recycle/Upcycle at the BIG RED BARN

We had a great sale at the Big Red Barn this weekend. Hope you were able to make it out! I had a lot of great discussions with the buyers and lots of suggestions for upcycling/recycling items we sell in the barn. We get many, many artisans and craftspersons at our sale who are looking for items to make everything from robots to bird feeders. I’d like to share a few ideas with you.

This was one of my favorite ideas. This clever crafter, takes large round doilies and wraps them around different pumpkins at Halloween/Fall. Easy! She will just tie up the top for great holiday decor. I liked the idea of using the different colors of doilies. You could also experiment with the tie for different looks – ribbon, twine, fabric, etc.

Another idea was using the multitude of miscellaneous glassware pieces you can find at garage sales to make bird feeders. You could use milk glass, depression glass, etc. It’s a great use for pieces with a tiny chip, imperfection, or cloudiness. I liked the idea of using the square dishes or even the divided dishes. You could assemble them with a base, or not, and place them in your garden.

I also find literally, hundreds of punch cups at sales for practically nothing. Everyone is trying to get rid of them. I would suggest using old punch cups for a single serve at a party. They are perfect to hold desserts, snacks, salads, etc. They’re a perfect grab and go for your party and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Finally, the frames and trophy tops. People bought the frames to use for projects from simple painting to embellishment. The trophy tops were used as pegs to make hangers on a board. I thought this would be cute for a kids room. You get tons of trophies with no future life.

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas. More will be shared soon. Happy hunting!!

Shower Soothers

Cold weather is officially here in Oklahoma. I don’t know about you but my sinuses take a beating in the winter. This last week was pretty miserable for me as I had a horrible sinus infection complete with fluid behind my ears and a terrible headache. My doctor prescribed me some antibiotics and Sudafed which helped but I still had the headache due to the medication. That’s when I decided to make a batch of shower soothers.

Shower soothers are perfect for anyone who suffers from allergies or comes down with a cold. I get pretty bad allergies all year round so I try to keep these in stock. Anytime I wake up with a headache or congestion I just pop one of these on the shower floor and I get instant relief. They’re very easy to make and simple to use. Below I share the recipe which makes about twenty soothers with the size of mold I used.

Shower Soothers

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3 Tbs coconut oil
  • 1 Tbs Vapor Rub
  • 15 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • 15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • Silicone mold

Combine the baking soda, citric acid and cornstarch in a bowl. In a separate bowl microwave the coconut oil for 1 minute. Add essential oils to the coconut oil. Mix the coconut oil and essential oils into the dry ingredients. Add Vapor Rub and stir until we’ll incorporated. Spoon the mixture into the molds. Spoon and then press the mixture into the molds until firm. Let the molds dry overnight. Pop them out and store in an airtight container.

When you are ready to use just place one soother on the floor of your shower under warm running water. Take a few deep breaths and feel the soother going to work on clearing any congestion!

I hope you enjoy these shower soothers as much as I do. Have a great week and check out our post next Monday!

Halloween Wreath

As the leaves change colors and the air gets a little cooler, we start to get excited for Fall and Halloween. Fall is such a great time to start a festive craft for the season. We are definitely in love with this Halloween wreath!

Purchase a grapevine wreath from any craft store. We purchased this one at Hobby Lobby as well as the decorations. We spray painted it black with a metallic purple overlay, but you can experiment with colors – green, orange, or any Halloween color. We love to use Krylon spray paint because it dries quickly and gives your project a nice even shine!

You can purchase the decorations several months before Halloween as they tend to put out seasonal items well in advance. You can also purchase after Halloween for a deeper discount for next year! We went with an orange and black theme for our decorations for a Halloween look but we are also Oklahoma State Cowboy fans so it serves a dual purpose.

The ribbon for the bow was purchased from Joann’s. We always select wire edge ribbon for a crisper bow. The decorations were laid out and then hot glued or twist tied on. We used bread sack twist ties and used a Sharpie to color them black to blend with the wreath.

It’s that easy! Now you just have to hang your wreath and accept all of the compliments you get! Follow our blog to get more holiday ideas and so much more!
